History of Tulsa

A clan from the Muscogee tribe settled in present day Tulsa around the late 1820s to 1830s. They named the area “Tulasi.” The word means “Old Town.” Over time, people moved to the area and a small town took hold, and Tulsa the city was then incorporated in 1898. Everything changed for Tulsa when at the beginning of the 20th Century, oil was found near the city. Soon, the area exploded with growth as people came to the area looking for jobs and opportunity. In fact, Tulsa was known as the “Oil Capital of the World.” The formation of U.S. Highway 66 brought travelers and visitors to the town. LIke most of the The economy of Tulsa suffered greatly in 1982 when the price of oil dropped dramatically. The economy has rebounded as the city has sought to diversify in business dealings other than solely with the oil industry.

The Oklahoma Aquarium, which has a variety of fish including sharks, brings kids and adults into a new, fascinating water world. One of the largest museums in Tulsa is the Gilcrease Museum, which has various gardens and exhibits of Native American and American West art. The Tulsa Performing Arts Center is home to the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra and has opera, ballet and much more.
