The History of Palo Alto

The city was named for a tall redwood tree (Palo Alto means “tall tree”) that once stood across from Menlo Park; it marked the location of the first Spanish settlement here. The tree was over 1,000 years old when it was destroyed in a storm towards the end of the 20th century. Leland Stanford originally wanted to found Stanford University in the town of Mayfield, which was located in what is now the neighborhood of South Palo Alto. Stanford wanted to ban alcohol, a notion that the residents of Mayfield rejected. As an alternative, Stanford chose to start the Temperance Town of Palo Alto in 1894.

Today Palo Alto offers more than 30 parks and operates its own utilities and storm drainage services. In fact, it could be said that the city serves as Silicon Valley's nerve center in that it is home to over 7,000 businesses. Among the companies that operate here are Hewlett-Packard and Tesla Motors.

The Palo Alto School System

Palo Alto's school system is widely recognized, with most of its schools scoring well on standardized tests. The city offers two high schools: Gunn and Palo Alto High, both of which offer advanced courses and have excellent reputations.

Getting Around Palo Alto

Palo Alto's location makes getting to major routes easy. Interstate 280, Highway 101 and Highway 84 are all easily accessible. For anyone who needs to get to an airport, travel to San Francisco by bus is also easy. Those traveling within the city should find travel simple via the CalTrain system. Palo Alto also has multiple bike paths and its own shuttle service.
