Leland Stanford originally wanted to found Stanford University in the town of Mayfield, which was located in what is now the neighborhood of South Palo Alto. Stanford wanted to ban alcohol, a notion that the residents of Mayfield rejected. As an alternative, Stanford chose to start the Temperance Town of Palo Alto in 1894.
