Home to a fair amount of the most desirable residential properties in San Francisco, Nob Hill has a long pedigree of upper-crust living. As the name implies, the neighborhood sits atop a hill. The homes also tend to be relatively large — especially for the Bay Area, where tiny apartments and communal living are relatively normal. In contrast, Nob Hill is home to many larger houses, mansions and stately hotels. In nearly every sense of the expression, this neighborhood is a cut above the rest. Nob Hill is roughly in the center of San Francisco's downtown core. It's surrounded by Chinatown, Pacific Heights, Russian Hill, the Tenderloin and, perhaps most notably, the city's famous Union Square neighborhood. Union Square itself is two blocks outside of the neighborhood. It's a large open plaza surrounded by shops, hotels and restaurants, serving as the city's — and northern California's — premier shopping destination. Right in Nob Hill itself, there are scores of restaurants along the Polk Gulch, one of San Francisco's hottest dining areas. As with all of the downtown San Francisco areas, there are a variety of small, municipal parks for residents to enjoy in Nob Hill. The Marin Headlands are also accessible for trips further afield, due to easy access to the Golden Gate Bridge.
For cultural opportunities, there's plenty of history, architecture and art in and around the Nob Hill area. The Cable Car Museum is on the corner of Washington and Mason, and Grace Cathedral sits opposite Huntington Park on Taylor Street. Historic mansions line the streets, independent museums dot the area and SFMOMA is just on the other side of Union Square.
There is not always an opportunity available on the open market in Nob Hill, and attractive listings here tend to go quickly — even compared with San Francisco in general.
