History of Sacramento

The original inhabitants before European arrival were the native Nisenan Maidu tribe who were hunters and gatherers. Although Spanish discovered the land in 1808, it wasn’t until John Sutter established a territory called New Helvetia in 1839 that the region began to grow. Soon after in 1948 a gold nugget was discovered and in 1949 the Gold Rush came to California. In 1869 the railroad connected the east and west coast and turned what was a six month trip into a short six day trip. With the trend of urban sprawl taking place all over the country, the first suburban mall was built in North Sacramento in 1945. Since then, Sacramento has continued to grow and has replaced focus on the downtown area as a center of economic growth.
