Known regionally as one of the most quickly revitalizing neighborhoods in the Bay Area, Jack London Square in Oakland is a waterfront community with a rapidly developing residential, dining and entertainment scene. Working docks stand alongside hip new restaurants and boutique brands in this long-standing landmark neighborhood along the Oakland Estuary. Generally speaking, the borders go from the water to the freeway, from Castro in the west to Jackson in the east. A stricter definition would probably run from Clay to Jackson. However, the characteristic trendy businesses, renovated spaces and modern developments have been consistently challenging that definition and expanding the neighborhood — in spirit, at the very least. One of the reasons the area is so popular is simple: convenience. It has its own Amtrak station, BART is accessible via Lake Merritt, Webster and Harrison lead to the Alameda tubes just north of the freeway and, of course, the Bay Bridge is just a few minutes away. The San Francisco Bay Ferry is available directly from the square itself — the mixed-use waterfront landmark that defines the neighborhood and gives it its name.
Jack London Square itself is a fitness area, dining destination, shopping center and transit hub that extends a few blocks along the Oakland Waterfront south of the Embarcadero. The mixed-use area starts at about the Port Authority and continues to Estuary Park, with Jack London's cabin roughly halfway through at Webster. One of the city's farmer's markets is near the cabin on the weekends, but there are also plenty of options for farm-fresh food in the neighborhood's various restaurants and specialty grocers.
Overall, people love living here for the bustling vibe of mixed industrial, commercial, recreational and residential activity. Although there are other, similar neighborhoods throughout the Bay Area — such as Dogpatch, for example — Jack London Square has an attitude all its own. It's a great place to visit, and it's also a true live-work-play nexus. Check out what's upcoming and currently available by contacting a neighborhood expert today.
