History of Jacksonville

A recent finding of pottery found on Black Hammock Island traces of humans back to 2500 BC in the Jacksonville area. When the Europeans arrived during the 16th century the native inhabitants during that time were the Mocama. Jacksonville was named after Andrew Jackson when the region became part of the United States in 1821. Although during the revolution, no war was fought in Jacksonville proper, it did switch hands between Confederate and Union forces. Shortly after the war it became a popular spot for winter vacations. There was a large fire in 1901 that started in a fiber factory that left 10,000 residents homeless. Reconstruction was during 1901 until 1912 and more than 13,000 homes were built. At the end of this construction, thirty silent films studios were located in Jacksonville due to the tropical climate. Today, many financial organizations are located in Jacksonville and the largest employers are the two military bases (Naval Air Station Jacksonville and Mayport Naval Air Station).
