With a population of around 61,000, Rockville is the third largest city in Maryland and is also one of the state's oldest towns. The city's origins date back to pre-revolutionary times. The town has undergone many name changes since its humble beginnings when it was simply called "Hungerford's Tavern" after its best-known landmark. The town was named "Rockville" in 1801, presumably because of its proximity to nearby Rock Creek.
Dotted among the city's modern neighborhoods are some historic sites worth investigating, including the Red Brick Courthouse, constructed in 1891, and the Beall-Dawson House, an 1815-built home that offers visitors a glimpse of what life was like in the early days of the city. Founded in 1938, the Olney Theatre Center for the Arts is one of two state theaters in Maryland. The theater features modern American classics during its main season and promotes alternative plays during the off-season.
