Inside the dome are animals and plants from three of the world’s most famous deserts and underneath is the world’s largest exhibit of nocturnal life. These are just two of the many fascinating exhibits you will find at this world class zoo. If you love flowers a great place to spend a day is at Omaha’s Botanical Center, Lauritzen Gardens. Here you can ride a tram or take a leisurely stroll through 100 acres of beautiful trails and pathways with more than 17 different types of gardens including a Victorian Garden, a rose garden and a children’s garden. Naturally, there are many other great places to visit in Omaha such as the Joslyn Museum and Castle, Fort Omaha, the Creighton Orpheum Theater and the Holland Performing Arts Center. Another great place is The Old Market, once a historical area. Keeping its old time charm it has been transformed into a destination perfect for shopping, dining and nightlife.

History of Omaha, NE

In the mid-1740s, more than a century before it was settled, land speculators from Iowa began to illegally stake claim to Indian land in what is now Omaha. Eventually a treaty was reached with the Indian tribe, known as the "Omaha" and on July 4, 1854, the city of Omaha was founded. As decades passed, businesses and industries emerged that outfitted farmers in areas further to the west and stockyards and packinghouses were developed. The growth of the city happened quickly and many referred to it as the “Magic City”. By the middle of the 1900s, Omaha had become a powerhouse in the meatpacking industry. During the second half of the century, major highways were expanded, suburbs grew and diverse cultural and ethnic areas developed. As the 1990s ended and the new millennium began, Omaha was in the midst of adding several billion dollars of new construction further making this one time Indian territory a great place to live.

Omaha Schools

Omaha has many outstanding colleges and universities including The University of Nebraska, the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Grace University, Creighton University, Bellevue University, College of Saint Mary, Clarkson College, Nebraska Methodist College, Nebraska Christian College and Metropolitan Community College.

Every June Omaha hosts the NCAA College World Series. During the two week period, eight regional baseball championship teams compete for the title. The city is also home to the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League and the Omaha Storm Chasers, the AAA affiliate team of the Kansas City Royals. There are also local basketball, ice hockey and soccer teams to cheer for.
