History of Franklin TN

The city of Franklin began in 1799 when it was founded by a Tennessee state senator named Abram Maury. Maury named the city in honor of Benjamin Franklin. During the Civil War, Franklin was the site of a major battle known as the Battle of Franklin. Thousands of people were killed or injured during the course of the fighting. Many homes and buildings were turned into makeshift hospitals in order to care for the wounded. After the Civil War, much of Franklin's economic base was destroyed. It took many years for the Franklin area to recover.

Franklin has been voted as one of the best places in America to retire and as one of the best places to live in the United States.  Business Week Magazine also named Frankin as one of the best places in America to start a small business.  Several large corporations have their headquarters here, including Nissan Motors
