World-famous for its role in space exploration, Cape Canaveral, FL is a town in Florida's Space Coast region. It is on a barrier island between the Atlantic and the Banana River, part of the Intracoastal Waterway. It's almost directly due east from Orlando, accessible by State Road 50. The regional Merritt Island Airport is the closest general aviation airport to town, but most visitors fly in to the larger Orlando or the Orlando-Melbourne airports. Many people also come in on ships, as Port Canaveral is one of the busiest and most expansive cruise ports in the world. A little known fact: Cape Canaveral is not actually the space center. The Kennedy Space Center is on nearby Merritt Island, separated from Cape Canaveral proper by the Banana River. (read more about living in Cape Canaveral)
