History of Louisville

From its earliest beginnings Louisville has held a prominent place in American history. Named for the French King Louis the 16th, the husband of Marie Antoinette, the city was founded by George Rogers Clark in 1778 and received its town charter in 1781. During the American Civil War, Louisville was a Union stronghold and today there are many historical landmarks, Civil War monuments and museums located there. You can tour the homes of George Rogers Clark or President Zachary Taylor, take a stroll through beautiful historical district or visit the last authentic steamboat, the Belle of Louisville.

Living in Louisville

But history isn’t the only thing that makes Louisville a great place to live. The city is rich with cultural events and activities that are fun and interesting for everyone. For instance you can attend the annual Bluegrass Balloon Festival, the Louisville Zombie Attack or the Forecastle Festival. If you love theater the Kentucky Theater for the Performing Arts, The Actors Theater of Louisville or Stage One Family Theater are great places to go. Naturally, there are also many great movie theaters in the city too. Another fascinating place to tour is the Louisville Mega Cavern, an underground cavern that is certain to be a wondrous adventure. The cavern is man-made and is part of the corridors that are 17 miles long underneath the city of Louisville. This beautiful city has more than 120 parks including the spectacular 85 acre Waterfront Park. It is also home to the largest urban forest in the country.

There are many outstanding colleges and universities located in Louisville including ITT Technical Institute, Brown Mackie College, Jefferson Community and Technical College and Spencerian College. Among the universities are Bellarmine, Spalding, Sullivan, Campbellsville, DeVry and the University of Louisville.

Sports Fans in Louisville

If you love sports, Louisville has many professional and college teams, a state-of-the-art arena in the heart of the city and horse racing at its finest. There are also many horse shows for spectators to enjoy. Considered to be one of America’s best college sports towns, Louisville is certain to have a team for you to cheer on whether your favorite sport is basketball, football, ice hockey, baseball, soccer or wrestling.
