For those looking for the true LA lifestyle, there are many different options available. However, perhaps ironically, one of the most iconic Los Angeles locations is not in the city at all. It's actually in Santa Monica, CA. This iconic beach and resort community at the end of historic US Route 66 boasts one of the most famous stretches of beach in Los Angeles county. Pacific coast highway runs along most of the Waterfront, continuing up the coast through Malibu and merging with 101 in Oxnard. Santa Monica is at the confluence of several expressways, has its own regional airport, sports a major train station and even has a massive marina nearby. The city is surrounded by LA on all sides except for the waterfront. Nearby communities include West LA, Brentwood, Mar Vista, Venice and Pacific Palisades. (read more about living in Santa Monica)

Many of the fun things to do in Santa Monica are located along the beach. This area is the main tourist draw for the city, and it contains attractions such as the pier, the original muscle beach, museums, hotels and restaurants. Just a little bit inland, across the park that runs between Ocean Avenue and the Pacific Coast Highway, the downtown area extends out to around 10th Street. The actual borders of downtown would probably be best defined as California Avenue, Lincoln Boulevard and Colorado Avenue, with the park on the southwest side. This area is home to most of the high-rise condo buildings, theaters, cultural institutions, nightlife and everyday essentials. Any address within this grid is a great option for people who want a walkable, urban, live-work-play lifestyle that's only a few minutes from the beach. Right west of the highway, there is also a strip of developed land between the oceanfront boardwalk and the main downtown. These addresses, when available, represent some of the most iconic examples of Los-Angeles-area beachfront living.
If there is one thing that almost everyone loves about Santa Monica, it's the beach.
