The original inhabitants before European arrival were the native Lenni Lenape who lived on the island during the summers. Although discovered in 1609 by Europeans, it wasn’t until Colonel John Stevens bought the land in 1783 that Hoboken took its name and and Colonel Stevens began to develop the island into a resort by developing the waterfront into a river walk. In 1846 the first organized baseball game was played in a cleared out field along the waterfront. In 1908 the subway was linked to New York creating a greater connection with the urban surroundings. Hoboken continued to develop as a hub to international trade due to having access to NYC and the international seas. Immigrants brought with them their culture and traditions, much of which remains in the city today.
