When the Spanish arrived in Pensacola during the 16th century, the native inhabitants were the Pensacola, which is where the town got its name from. After the Spanish, the area was claimed by the French, followed by the Spanish again, then the English, then the Spanish a third time, the United States, the Confederate, and then became part of the United States again as it is now since 1865. Because of this, Pensacola is known as “The city of five flags” from the different rulers that have governed the city.
