History of Jersey City

The original inhabitants of Jersey City were the native Lenni-Lenape, who didn’t survive long after the Europeans arrived in the 1600s. The massive immigration of Europeans to the United States during 1870-1912 affected Jersey City’s economics and culture. This historic timeline marker is still present today with residents still an eclectic blend of cultures and traditions. In 1911, “The Tubes” opened and made travel between Jersey City and Manhattan possible. Today Jersey City is a robust town for young professionals and families. Jersey City has over 18 million square feet of office space downtown making it the 12th largest downtown in the United States.

About Jersey City

Jersey City is the second largest city in New Jersey with 247,597 residents according to the census in 2010. The 1930 census recorded 316,715 residents and historians blame Mayor Frank Hague who governed Jersey City from 1917-1947, which resulted in 75,000 residents leaving and 5,000 jobs lost. Now the city has regained much of the economic vitality, yet signs of this unique historic story.

Jersey City has plenty of things to do including taking a ferry with short lines to the Statue of Liberty, or watching a classic film at the breathtaking Loew's Jersey Theatre, or a peaceful afternoon at Liberty State Park where you can enjoy a picnic and the best view of NYC and go for a race car ride at Pole Position Raceway. If you’re new to Jersey City, or just want a new look at Jersey City, you can explore the history on a self walking tour from the 1600s to present day. There are wonderful museums in Jersey City including the Liberty Science Center where every age can enjoy the educational experience including the mesmerizing “touch tunnel”, and the Museum of Russian Art where the focus is on Soviet Nonconformist Art (produced in the Soviet after the death of Joseph Stalin until era of Perestroika and Glasnost-1953-1986). For those seeking a more grassroots experience you can find unique events including Jersey City’s annual Art & Studio Tours.
