FORT WORTH — What the heck is all this talk about a “Fort Worth Streetcar” system? In short, this is a great project from the City of Fort Worth and the Fort Worth Transportation Authority that will help bring further economic development and better urban mobility to Fort Worth’s downtown and surrounding areas.

On Thursday, July 8, 2010, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded this project $25 million in funding…the maximum amount possible from this effort. This will allow an initial 2.5-mile one-way streetcar loop to be constructed connecting a Trinity Railway Express (TRE) commuter rail station and Intermodal Transportation Center with the central business district of Fort Worth.

This initial streetcar loop will have three vehicles running between 20 and 25 stops. Although the exact path of the initial loop has not yet been finalized, potential routes and future expansions can be found at the project’s official website, . This website has lots of great information about the Fort Worth Streetcar project and other similar projects around the country.

For those living or visiting downtown Fort Worth and its nearby neighborhoods, this streetcar system will bring many conveniences and benefits:

• more urban development along the streetcar paths,

• a modern transportation system,

• attraction of young professionals to downtown living,

• better mobility and independence for seniors,

• better mobility for families,

• connecting neighborhoods, and

• a reduction in pollution as well as positive environmental implications.

This initial 2.5 mile section of the project will be the hub of a planned streetcar network connecting six designated “urban villages” targeted for redevelopment to the city’s major employment centers. Some of the areas planned for inclusion in the streetcar system include West 7th, North Main, Trinity Bluffs, Near Southside Medical District and obviously Downtown Fort Worth.

Again, check out the website for this project ( ) and join the Facebook group for more details and updates. This is just one of the many exciting things happening in urban Fort Worth right now making it a great place to play, shop and live!
