The Big D is living up to its name.

The Dallas-Fort Worth area ranks No. 4 in the nation among metropolitan areas with the largest populations.

Only nine U.S. metro areas have populations above 5 million, according to new estimates generated Wednesday by Business First of Buffalo. D-FW has a population of 6,618,405 residents, ranking behind No. 1 New York City with 19.15 million residents and Los Angeles with 12.93 million residents.  Chicago has 9.64 million residents.

Also above 5 million are Houston (No. 5), Philadelphia, Atlanta, Miami-Fort Lauderdale and Washington. The greater Houston area has 6,022,719 residents.

Business First produces weekly population projections for states, metros, micros, counties, towns, cities and villages.

G. Scott Thomas is with the DBJ's sister publication Business First of Buffalo. He compiled all the data for the above report.
