Chris Gillot, a Humble Chicago Icon

Chris Gillot was honored after his passing last week.  He is best known for creating bright lit up words on the side of the blue cross shield tower in Chicago. Chris started the tradition in after Walter Payton died.  Chris, an electrician at the tower, was inspired to display his number “34” in large lights on the side of the building.

As Chris did for Walter, the rest of the electricians posted “THANKS CHRIS” brightly on the side of the building on Tuesday to honor their fellow colleague.

Chris was described as a person who loved to take things apart and put them back together.  He prepared a piece of paper to a computer.  He was shy about the attention he got for the work he did on the tower, however it was an immense source of pride he humbly carried inside .

At, we honor the beauty and pride Chris added to the skyline.
