
From a Google's eye view, Markethouse Lofts, an award-winning condominium
development of 54 bi-level lofts, appears to be a collection of side-tracked
box cars.
Steinberg Architects planned it that way to transform a small, triangular,
1.5-acre in-fill industrial area site, along the Union Pacific railway, into
a unique urban enclave with a sense of place.
The Regis Home-built community rose out of an old industrial district of
canneries near San Jose's historic Japantown, Gordon Biersch Brewery and
Bernal Park, a neighborhood that blends the old with the new and families
with young professionals.
The soaring entry way is emblazoned with a plaque that reminds loft owners
and visitors of the residential development's local and national
significance.
