Between Market and Townsend in San Francisco you'll find a great patchwork of warehouses, artist lofts, apartments, condos and some of the city's hottest nightspots. South of Market, or SoMa, is a genuine urban landscape that has become the model for more contrived neighborhoods in cities across the nation. SoMa grew with the dot com boom in the 90's when abandoned warehouses were converted to hip work spaces and new residential buildings sprang up throughout the neighborhood. As a result, trendy new retail and restaurants opened up to serve the bigger crowd.
