History of Louisville

From its earliest beginnings Louisville has held a prominent place in American history. Named for the French King Louis the 16th, the husband of Marie Antoinette, the city was founded by George Rogers Clark in 1778 and received its town charter in 1781. During the American Civil War, Louisville was a Union stronghold and today there are many historical landmarks, Civil War monuments and museums located there. You can tour the homes of George Rogers Clark or President Zachary Taylor, take a stroll through beautiful historical district or visit the last authentic steamboat, the Belle of Louisville.

But history isn’t the only thing that makes Louisville a great place to live. The city is rich with cultural events and activities that are fun and interesting for everyone. Naturally, there are also many great movie theaters in the city too. Another fascinating place to tour is the Louisville Mega Cavern, an underground cavern that is certain to be a wondrous adventure. The cavern is man-made and is part of the corridors that are 17 miles long underneath the city of Louisville. This beautiful city has more than 120 parks including the spectacular 85 acre Waterfront Park. It is also home to the largest urban forest in the country.
