KSDK -- For the first time, NewsChannel 5 got a look at the new grocery store opening in downtown St. Louis in less than a week.

More than 10,000 residents now call downtown St. Louis home. The fast-growing area is also the place where city leaders say 90,000 people come from all over to work.

While there has been no shortage of things to do downtown, Mayor Francis Slay says one thing has long been missing.

"One of the things people were looking for is a full-service grocery store that really will help them get the things they need when they need it downtown in a very convenient way," Slay said.

When it opens, the new multi-level Schnucks will feature a host of amenities. Customers can also order fresh meat, poultry and seafood in the deli department, and the store will make deliveries.

Zach Heath, a new downtown resident, said he's excited at the idea of possibly walking to his neighborhood grocery store.

"It's definitely a lot closer than most other grocery stores and it's gonna be nicer than most so it's a plus for downtown living," Heath said.

Nadia Russell, a member of the Downtown St. Louis Residents Association, said her family has lived in the area for the last three years, and will shop at the downtown store.

The downtown Schnucks also plans to offer valet service and delivery.

At just over 20,000 square feet, it's less than half the size of a typical Schnucks grocery store. "What it lacks in space, it will make up for in service and products," Schnuck said.
