Kirkwood Condos

Located in Dekalb County near Lake Claire, Oakhurst and East Lake, Kirkwood is only minutes from downtown Atlanta and downtown Decatur. Many intown neighborhoods are also easily accessible from here such as Emory and Little Five Points as are transportation options such as Marta (East Lake Station) and the Downtown Connector. The name Kirkwood comes from a melding of the names of the two families, Kirkpatrick and Dunwoody, who owned most of the land here prior to the Civil War. Now the homes here range from old bungalows that are being renovated, to new developments, to loft style buildings, all of which reflect the groups of people who live in this vibrant community.

In late 2003, work began on Phase I of a $1.5M streetscape project in the district that is aimed at attracting small businesses. The project increased pedestrian access by narrowing street crossings, slowing traffic, installing crosswalks and building wider sidewalks. Today, Downtown Kirkwood has become a destination with its own post office, fire station, police precinct and public library. Residents and visitors also have a host of shopping and dining options at their disposal as well as three of Atlanta’s public parks: Gillem Park, Coan Park, and Bessie Branham Park.
